Foundations in Nutrition

We've all heard the phrase, "you are what you eat". I have always taken that to mean that if I eat healthy foods, I will be healthy. This can be true, but there is so much more to it.

What we eat impacts how our bodies function. It also impacts how we perform, how much energy we have, how we think and make decisions, in other words, it affects everything about how we show up.

What we choose to eat extends far beyond our physical health and the size of our jeans. What we eat matters in all aspects of our lives and contributes directly to our sense of well-being.

The good news is that there's no shortage of information about what we "should" and "should not" be eating, or what is "healthy" and what is "unhealthy." The tricky part comes when what we should be eating and what is considered healthy from one source is exactly the opposite of what we are told from another source. For example, how can a Paleo diet (very high in animal protein) be the healthiest way to eat, but at the same time, a Vegan diet (no meat, all plant proteins) be the healthiest way to eat and promote health?

So, how do we sift through all the information out there and distinguish between fact and fiction to find what serves us best?

The great news is you are the expert on YOU! You are the one who knows what foods are serving you and which foods might not be. You are a bio-individual human whose needs are unique to YOU. The even better news is that you get to choose what works for you and what does not. YOU are the leader of your well-being and are the one person in control of how you show up in your life. So choose what you know is best for you and your body will reward you.

Macronutrients

Protein

Protein is a vital macronutrient made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of your body. It plays a key role in building and repairing muscles, supporting immune function, producing hormones and enzymes, and keeping you feeling full and energized. Whether you're active, healing, or just maintaining overall health, getting enough quality protein is essential for your body to function at its best.

Fats

Fats are a key macronutrient that support your body in many essential ways. They provide long-lasting energy, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), protect your organs, and play a role in hormone production and brain health. Healthy fats—like those from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil—are crucial for overall wellness and should be part of a balanced diet.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates (carbs) are your body’s main source of energy. They break down into glucose, which fuels your brain, muscles, and organs. Found in foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, healthy carbs also provide fiber, which supports digestion and blood sugar balance. Carbs are essential for energy, especially during physical activity and mental focus.
